VOLUNTEER PROGRAM OPPORTUNITYS FOR ALL AGES AND SKILL LEVELS:

Kifaru Youth & Children Centre (KYCC) is a Non-Governmental Organization established in 2014 and structured as a Community Based Organization (CBO.)  In February 2015, KYCC registered under Tanzanian Law N0: 24 Act 2002 and is now governed by Tanzanian NGO Law.  KYCC’s registration number is N0.00NGO/0007798.

Kifaru Youth & Children Centre is headquartered in Karatu District of Arusha Tanzania and within the Northern Circuit of East Africa.  Close by are Ngorongoro and Serengeti National Parks.

OUR MISSION

Creating educational opportunities for marginalized people in remote areas of Tanzania.  We believe every child should have the opportunity to attend primary school.  We are convinced that education is the best way to break the cycle of poverty.  Poor, uneducated children grow up to be poor, uneducated adults.  Children of poor families are less likely to enroll in and complete schooling because of the costs of attending school.  Social taboos also limit education.  Our program aims to be an advocate for these marginalized and vulnerable people, and to offer programs and support to help them rise out of extreme poverty and become self-sustaining adults.

KYCC is seeking volunteers to support our campaign against HIV/AIDS. This campaign is a very important part of what we do; it is part of our NGO’s social obligation to our people. Volunteers will help bring
social services to remote areas of Karatu. We welcome volunteers of all ages and all skill sets.
Services include general and financial education, education of children with disabilities, enterprenueship programs,

medical services and healthcare, childcare, environmental conservation, and

investment
projects.
Opportunities include but are not limited to:
Teaching disabled children: Volunteers will have to opportunity to work in our government’s new Primary School Disabled Children Program. Childcare: Volunteers care for children in our centre, feeding,
loving and interacting with the kids. This program provides both the children and the volunteers with an opportunity to expand their horizons, learn from their experiences and develop greater skills.
Most of all, volunteers will have the chance to give love and attention to these kids who so desperately need it…and, you will definitely be repaid with smiles and hugs! Financial and literacy education are much needed in Our Womens’ Group program. Group members include women working in agriculture, small trades, jewellery, gardening, tailoring, making batik, and other small businesses. The program encourages independence and a chance for women to develop new skills learned from each other and from our teachers.
Medical: Medical professionals are much needed in our community. Please come share your knowledge and participate in Health Management activities. Medical interns are encouraged to practice in our
hospitals and Primary Health Care Units. This helps us meet the need for trained professionals and enables internists to obtain field experience in a remote area. KYCC also offers specifically vocational volunteer projects.

WHY VOLUNTEER IN TANZANIA:
It gives you the opportunity to:

Experience real life in a vulnerable community but in a politically
stable country. Visit some of the world’s most famous national parks (e.g., Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti) Climb the highest mountain peak in Africa (Kilimanjaro.) Become acquainted with Tanzania’s many tribes and culturals. Learn “Street Swahili “ (Swaga) beginning with the slang greeting
“mambo vipi?” (“Hi, how are you?”) The response being “poa” (“Cool”.) Other experiences include: hash runs, African Live Band outings, visits to the beautiful island Zanzibar, Mountain trekking and Safari
explorations.
YOUR COSTS

All international volunteers do pay fees. These fees cover your accommodation, transportation, transfers as well as food and emergency medical care. However, you will be paying the “at cost” rate rather than the rate paid as a tourist where additional fees are added. We will arrange your accommodation and transportation within Tanzania. Costs vary depending on the length of stay, distance to and location of your volunteer site. Fly into either Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam airports and then take a short flight to Arusha airport where we will arrange for you to be picked up.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
We have programs ranging from 1 – 24 weeks. You can combine both volunteering and an adventure Safari into the one trip. You can volunteer with our local communities and then take a short
flight or, in some cases, a short drive to visit the Serengeti, Manyara, Ngorongoro, Arusha, Mikumi, or Tarangire National Parks, or take a holiday trip to the tropical beaches of Zanzibar, Bagamoyo,
Mombasa or the bustling city of Dar Es Salaam.
If you prefer mountain climbing, you can combine volunteering with climbing some of Africa’s highest peaks such as Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Meru, Mt.Kenya and Mt. Oldonyo Lengai. Get the inside scoop on the
Kilimanjaro climb from our founder, a former Mt. Kilimanjaro guide.
These are all well arranged programs, where we can offer wonderful experiences and time the arrangements to suit you for your entire stay in Tanzania.

For example, if you want a total of 4 weeks in Tanzania, we can arrange it so you to spend the first two weeks getting dusty and dirty volunteering with the community, and then the second two weeks doing
wild adventuring and/or a beach holiday. Feel free to adventure with us.

We currently accommodate 40+ children at our Centre. We plan to
expand to several Centres, each with 40 to 50 children.

 .The Weather:
Weather in the Northern Circuit especially in Arusha Region is perfect. Daily temperature stands between 24 to 27 degrees. However in the month of June to late August the temperature stands between 20 degrees during the day and 17 degrees during night. The rainy season starts in late March through April & May and then again in November – but it does not rain all the time. Tropical rain tends to be short & sharp followed by long periods of sunshine. It is usually driest in January & February and from June till end of October.

Prices:
Hotel and airline prices are highest over the Xmas & New Year period with additional supplements being payable on key holiday dates due to the very high demand. They are also very high in July & August when European holidays are at their peak. The lowest hotel rates are found during the rainy season in April & May when there are some good deals to be had. Some hotels extend these deals.

Health & Visas:
there are no statutory health requirements going into Tanzania and Zanzibar and a Visa can be obtained on arrival at a cost of $50. However, please note that if you have broken your journey in a country where yellow fever is present then a yellow fever inoculation certificate is required. For clients already holding a visa for Tanzania after taking a Safari there is no need for a separate visa for Zanzibar. It is advisable to take appropriate precautions against major health hazards such as Malaria and you should consult your local doctor on Malaria s t prevention and any other inoculations that might be recommended. Generally speaking, if staying in good quality accommodation such extra precautions are not normally necessary but better to make your own mind up on such things and take medical advice first.

Insurance:
ten require full payment for cheapest fares. This means that it is important to be fully covered financially against possible cancellations and Itinerary alterations if your plans go wrong. Health facilities in Arusha, Dar Es Salaam and Nairobi are very good but the best can be expensive so full cover is needed incase of any severe accident or illness.

Activities:
Northern Circuit of Tanzania, there are numerous activities such as game drives in Arusha National Park, Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti national Park and climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, balloon safari in Serengeti and Tarangire National Parks just to mention a few. You can also go for game fishing at Lake Victoria as well. In Zanzibar excellent game fishing (Marlin, Sailfish, tuna, wahoo etc) and scuba diving. There are also facilities for kite surfing and other water sports. Please ask for details on these activities if you want us to book them for you in advance and incorporate them.
